General Information

Chippawa Creek Conservation Area is a 10 hectare park located in the Township of Wainfleet. Accessible to people of all ability levels, the park boasts a large man-made reservoir and a number of trails, one of which is easily accessible to people with disabilities. The main path circles Dils Lake and is generally flat, of fine gravel, and gives visitors a great view of the lake and its surrounding woodlands. Paths are clean and well maintained, with easy access to the park's single lookout point and its docks and fishing piers. Canoes and kayaks are available for rental at the the gatehouse near the park entrance. Visitors can enjoy fishing, swimming, and boating (non-motorized) in the lake, not to mention hiking and picnicking. The park is popular for picnickers, with large areas of open space and picnic tables. There is a playground, a volleyball and basketball court, and a campground along one side of the lake, adding to the recreational value of the park.

The park is also backed by the Welland River, previously known as Chippawa Creek, popular for fishing along with Dils Lake which is stocked with largemouth bass, crappie and carp. In late June or July a fishing derby is held, bringing visitors of all ages to enjoy the park's attractive setting and fishing areas.

Historical / Ecological

Dils Lake Reservoir was built in the early 1960s shortly after having been acquired by the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority. NPCA officials considered the area of great value for educational, recreational, and wildlife conservation purposes. Topographically, the lake sits on a former ox-bow of the Welland River and a build-up of deposited soils has created a type of micro-climate, where instead of the clay-based soils found in much of the park there is a rich loam. This has allowed different sorts of trees to grow than the surrounding area including black walnut, shag bark hickory and bitternut, oaks and tulip trees.
