Colonel Gilbert Field built the Field House by 1800 on the property which was acquired by through a land grant. The two-story Field House is one of the oldest brick homes in Ontario, exhibiting classic Georgian architecture. The home has a rich history, being built by Americans looking to start a better life in Canada, to being transformed into a barracks and hospital during the War of 1812. Since 1980 the home has provincial recognition for its' heritage value to Ontario under the Ontario Heritage Act.

The home is located on the beautiful river banks of the Niagara River, overlooking the river and American neighbours. Other unique, beautiful homes surround the property, along with recreation trails, farms, and wineries. While looking at the historical home, you may engage with the local environment by walking down the Niagara Parkway or visiting nearby attractions.

George Field came to Upper Canada from Pennsylvania after the American Revolution as many United Empire Loyalists did to seek an escape from the war and its after effects. Unfortunately he passed not long after his arrival to Canada, leaving his family without much property. His son, Gilbert Field, petitioned for a land grant to compensate the family for their losses in the Revolution. Field was successful and did acquire 100 acres in 1790, building his home by 1800.

The War of 1812 brought on hardships for the Field family, again facing war and terror at their doorstep. British troops occupied the home during the early part of the war, however during the Battle of Queenston Heights, the Americans captured and occupied the home. The home was also used as a barracks and later as a hospital throughout the war.

The Field family restored damages of the home after the war, keeping ownership of the home until 1925. Since that time many owners have had the home even the Ontario Heritage Foundation owned the home for a short period of time in 1968-1980. Since 1980 the home has been owned privately, and again is for sale.

- Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW)

- Merge onto 403 (West) , stay on for the next 21 km

- Take left curve onto the QEW (Niagara/East Hamilton/Fort Erie),

- Continue on QEW for 63.4 km

- Slight left onto the 405 (Queenston Lewiston, USA)

- Turn left onto Stanley Ave/ Regional Road 102

- Slight right onto Portage Road, continue for 3.3 km

- Take second exit onto Niagara Parkway at the roundabout

- Continue for 6 km, destination will be on your left - look for historical plaque and parking spot at edge of the road, infront of the home

From Fort Erie/ Buffalo:

- Take the QEW towards Niagara Falls

- Take exit 34 on Regional Road 101 (Mountain Road)

- In 2.4 kms turn left onto Regional Road 100 (St. Paul Avenue), continue for 2.6 km

- Turn right into Regional Road 81 (York Road)

- Turn left onto Niagara Parkway after 3.8 kms

- Continue on the Niagara Parkway for 4.9 kms to reach the Field House on your left

- Destination will be on your left - look for historical plaque and parking spot at edge of the road, infront of the home

Parking is available right infront of the home at the side of the road. There are many parking lots along the Niagara Parkway with walking trails alongside the road.
