Niagara Parks Commission Tour Overview

About This Tour

This tour features 15 different Niagara Parks Commission locations and will educate our audience on the history of Niagara and its involvement in the War of 1812. This tour also provides insight on the Niagara Parks environmental studies, Audubon International certification, and the creatures and wildlife that the Niagara Region has to offer. The Commission was established in 1885 to control and protect the lands around the Horseshoe Falls and has now grown to cover 56 kilometres, all for us to explore.

History of the Niagara Parks Commission

The Niagara Parks Commission (NPC) was originally created to overlook the land directly around the Horseshoe Falls which gave them 154 acres of space. This was established in 1885 to control this land. NPC has since grown to maintain the land along the Niagara Parkway all the way from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Fort Erie which adds up to 3274 acres of land in total. It operates alone, is self-financed, and has its own personal divisions of services such as maintenance and police. NPC employs approximately just under 2000 staff every season, with most of that number being seasonal. The NPC's main importance is preserving the land along the parkway because of its rich history in several different time periods (mostly the War of 1812) and its environmental protection and preservation.

Goals of This Tour

Our objective as a team is to educate our audience on the importance of the history on the Niagara Parkway. There have been many important battles and wars fought here on its historical grounds that need to be remembered through history. There are also many environmentally sensitive habitats that the Niagara Parks Commission works hard to protect and preserve that also provide important knowledge on sustainability as a whole.
