General Description

The Laura Secord Homestead is the official residence of the heroine herself from the War of 1812. Visitors will be met by costumed interpreters who will provide tours and knowledge on the history of this location. A gift shop, refreshments, ice cream, and Laura Secord chocolates are all available here as a nice treat at the end of your tour. The significance of this homestead is to be understood through the eyes of heritage interpretation by presenting the background of women's rights at the time of event, as seen in the second rule of the Heritage Interpretation Policy.

Recreational Features

When open, the Laura Secord Homestead features costumed historical interpreters who provide tours of the home and property with information on the history of the house and general area. It also features a gift shop with items including souvenirs, refreshments, ice cream, and Laura Secord chocolates.

Historical Attributes

This is the official residence of heroine Laura Secord from the War of 1812 from 1803-1835. It was invaded by American soldiers during the Battle of Queenston Heights and the War of 1812. Laura escaped and started a 32 kilometre trek to Beaver Dams to warn the British of the American's surprise attack. The house and property has now been professionally restored for the public to go learn of Laura's history.

The sign in the front of the yard (pictured above) provides information on where Laura grew up, a small look into the importance of her story, and a bit of information on the building itself as well.

Importance Within NPC

Laura Secord Homestead was gifted to the Niagara Parks Commission in 1998 and it remains a very important piece in the NPC because of its major historical significance for Canada. The NPC went the extra step and in 2003 applied to have Laura Secord registered as a Person of National Historic Significance under the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. Laura Secord Homestead and her story is crucial to teaching younger and older generations alike about the her impact in the War of 1812 and that is why this empowering heroine is so important to the NPC.
