This tour provides an introductory overview of the historical buildings erected in Richards Landing that were an outcome of contributions made by Mrs. Florence Orrell.
The tour begins at the
Township of St. Joseph Public Library on the corner of Richards Street and Shore Road.
The route is about 300 metres long and will take around 20 minutes to complete. The tour will end at
Matthews Memorial Hospital located in the centre of Richards Landing's downtown area, a short walk away from the waterfront.
We will take you on a pleasant stroll down Richards Street and pass these historic building that still play a major role in the local community:
- the Township of St. Joseph Public Library brought Mrs. Florence Orrell's unique vision to life in 1942 and remains an important public space for the community;
- The Children's Library, a special location that provides the same ambience as when it opened in 1935, Mrs. Florence Orrell's most notable contribution is a testament to her passion for different cultures and education;
- Mrs. Orrell's Hall (Brandon Hall), a beautiful building that served many purposes for the community of Richards Landing, most notable as a place for leisure when owned by Mrs. Florence Orrell in 1936;
- the Maurice Burnside Memorial Hall, originally built as Royal Canadian Legion Branch 374 with money donated by Mrs. Florence Orrell in 1944, this building still honours Mr. Burnside by serving residents and visitors as commercial space;
- an essential building, the Matthews Memorial Hospital continues to serve the community since it opened in 1930 thanks to generous donations from Mrs. Florence Orrell
Richards Landing is a small town that thrives off of a big-hearted community filled with people like Mrs. Florence Orrell.
