The historical significance of my Walking Tour not only represents a slice of what life was like for the citizens of East Berlin but my focus is on the many characteristics of nostalgia for East German culture that still exists today.

My tour begins at the Volksbühne Theatre, known for being an artistic centre of leftist thought. I have also included a stop at the Berlin TV Tower, as it's not only the largest building in Berlin but from the tower East Germans citizens were broadcasted television programs that were enjoyed for many decades. Today, the TV tower stands as a functional monument to communist propaganda and still transmitting TV programs all around Europe. I end the tour at the Stasi Museum and former Headquarters, as any person that was stood in defiance toward the state would end up in this building and quite possibly in a jail cell in the basement.

Two of the three sites on my Walking Tour take place at Alexander Platz and the final sites is within a close proximity to Alexander Platz, which can be easily accessed via public transportation. I featured Alexander Platz prominently on my Walking Tour, as it was a major landmark before the GDR was established and changed upon being taken over by the East German government.

The sites I have chosen characterizes the artistic, entertainment and political cultures of the East German state, which today are occupied by many seeking their Ostalgie fix. The Volksbühne Theatre gave actors and playwrights many opportunities to explore their artistic expressions while having to skirt around state-censorship. The East German state-broadcaster provided entertainment from the TV Tower, while also censoring ideas that the state didn't endorse. Finally, upon leaving Alexander Platz, my tour will end at the Stasi Museum as it houses the location of the former Stasi headquarters. I have included this site because there are many overlooked aspects of nostalgia and this building that represents the darker side of the GDR.
