This plaque recognizes Laura Secord as "a person of national historic significance"; a Canadian heroine. It is located in front of the Laura Secord Homestead.

Just inside the fence at the eastern edge of the Partition Street parking lot behind the Laura Secord homestead is a bronze plaque erected by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. Unveiled in May 2006, the plaque recognizes Laura Secord as "a person of national historic significance" by the Minister of Canadian Heritage. The plaque reads:

"This celebrated heroine of the War of 1812 is a renowned figure in Canadian history. Determined to warn the British of an impending American attack on Beaver Dams, Secord set out from her home on June 22nd, 1813, on a dangerous mission. She travelled alone for over 30 kilometres behind enemy lines, struggling to make it to the De Cew farmhouse, where she informed Lieutenant James Fitzgibbon about the American plot. Later in the 19th century, a first generation of women historians championed Secord's courageous deed with the goal of uncovering and popularizing women's contributions to the history of Canada."

Unveiled in May 2006, the plaque recognizes Laura Secord's exploits and importance as a Canadian heroine. Laura Secord was recognized as "a person of national historic significance" by the Canadian government in 2002.

Persons of National Historic Significance, also known as National Historic Persons, are people designated by the Canadian government as being nationally significant in the history of the country. Designations are made by the Minister of the Environment on the recommendation of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. Approximately 70 nominations are submitted to the board each year. A person is eligible to be listed 25 years after death, except Prime Ministers who may be designated any time after death (Parks Canada 2009).

Parks Canada administers the program, and installs and maintains the federal plaques commonly erected to commemorate each person, usually placed at a site closely associated with them. The intent is generally to honour the person's contribution to the country, but in all cases to educate the public about them.
