In December 1856, the village council of Drummondville purchased two acres of land and the house on the Leonard estate to be used as the new Drummondville Grammar School (later Drummondville High School). The house was a long, two-storey frame building that had been used as a barricks and hospital by the government during the Rebellion of 1837. It was the first school in Welland County, and stayed in use until 1893 when the new Stamford Collegiate was built just south of it.

Commercial classes started in Stamford in 1909, and building expansions included a gymnasium, more classrooms and an auditorium. In January, 1962, the original Grammar School was demolished to make room for more expansions. Famous people who attended Stamford include Judy LaMarsh, the second female cabinet minister in Canada's history; broadcaster Barbara Frum; and filmmaker James Cameron.
