JH x66 Dezo Hoffmanns Studio 29 Wardour Street W1D 6PS

It is unusual to find any location involving a shop or restaurant to be in the same ownership but this, the very first, branch of Pizza Express opened in 1965 and despite several makeovers in that time it is still very definitely a Pizza Express and still with its Jazz Room on the first floor. What brings us here, though, is the former occupant of the second floor. It was here that photographer Dezo Hoffmann had his studio from 1960 until his death.

Dezo also moved his office here, from 20 Gerrard Street, in 1984. Dezo was staff photographer Record Mirror and snapped every big name in the sixties. He is especially remembered for his work with the Beatles. In Hendrix circles it is the triple-image cover of Smash Hits that immediately springs to mind.
