GN 1-14 Climbing the Niagara Escarpment

You are now climbing the Niagara escarpment - one of the most distinctive geological features in the Niagara region. Make sure you follow the trail signs.
The Niagara Escarpment was formed approximately 430 million years ago – before Niagara Falls existed and before the dinosaurs became extinct. It is a massive limestone formation that gradually eroded into the shape of a giant horseshoe - that can be traced from Rochester, New York, south of Lake Ontario to Hamilton, and then north to Tobermory on the Bruce Peninsula.
And without the erosion of the Niagara Escarpment by the Niagara River, one of the world's most magnificent and dramatic land features would never have been created – Niagara Falls.
