Jordan House - 1842

General Information

First licensed to John Spence this hotel has operated since 1842. Many hotels and inns were necessary as rest stops along the Old Indian Trail now known as King Street or Regional Road 81. Under Spence, the vigilante militia convened here, and later, it became a meeting place for the Louth town Council. It was also a stage for the Temperance debate, which sparked division in the village and county. To the dismay of many citizens, local taverns and inns stopped selling liqour briefly in 1906 when the Ontario Temperance Act was given a short life.

The Jordan Hotel was purchased in 2005 by the owners of Cave Springs Cellars and On the Twenty Restaurant, and has been renovated to re-open again as a tavern and inn.
