The Dufferin Island Loop Trail is a self-guided attraction that is open year-round. It provides a leisurely stroll for tourists. The trail is connected by a series of man-made wooden bridges and paths that guide visitors through the woods. Tourists have the opportunity to see the wildlife that lives here, and may see beavers in addition to fish and birds. If you're lucky, you'll be able to catch a glimpse of the critters close by and even feed these little angels of nature themselves.
Dufferin Island is especially "sparkling" in winter: it hosts the Winter Festival of Lights, which takes place from November to January every year. During the winter months, visitors driving through the island are definitely attracted by the various shapes of illuminations. It's free to see the lights up close, but visitors are welcome to make a voluntary donation.
Just across the road from Dufferin Island is the upper reaches of Niagara Falls. Tourists often go straight for the magnificent view of Niagara Falls, ignoring the more interesting scenery upstream. Unlike the great drop of the falls, the upper reaches are a vast expanse of water with waves. When the weather is clear, you can see rainbows as you look out over the falls, but when it rains, the cascading waves give the illusion of watching the ocean.
