General Description

Reif Estate Winery is founded in 1982 by Ewald Reif and located in the Niagara River sub-appellation. Reif produces predominantly estate bottled wines from its 125 acre vineyard first planted in 1977 with the philosophy that "great wines start in the vineyard". Reif Estate Winery has a rich history in Icewine production as a pioneer with our first vintage of Vidal Icewine produced in 1984. This 10 acre vineyard block on 125 acre estate is still used today to produce the internationally acclaimed Vidal Icewine.

Recreational Features

The winery boasts one of the most sophisticated, educational tasting room experiences in Niagara, complete with themed flights, blind tastings, food pairings and a sensory wine garden. In Reif Estate Winery, you can explore Wine Sensory Garden to ponder the colours, aromas and flavours characteristically used to describe wines. The gardens are designed to complement and reflect the heritage of original 1870's Coach House while featuring plantings representative of the colour, flavours and aromas of different grape varieties typically used to produce wines in the region. Guests may stroll through the garden at their leisure with a glass of wine or enjoy an artisan cheese plate or local charcuterie under the arbour.

Historical Attributes

The Reif family tradition of winemaking began nearly half a millennium ago in the small winemaking town of Neustadt, located in the heart of the world renowned Rhine River Valley in Germany. Today, Reif produces wines from its vineyard first planted in 1977. this tradition transcended to a new continent, when founder Ewald Reif purchased a plot of land on the fertile banks of the Niagara River in 1977. In 1982, Ewald Reif founded winery and later acquired by nephew Klaus W. Reif. Klaus Reif's philosophy that "great wines start in the vineyard" is the cornerstone of the quality and integrity of Reif Estate wines.

Reif's terroir

Reif vineyard is located in Ontario's warmest sub-appellation, ideal for the production of rich full-bodied wines. The farm is also home to some of the oldest vinifera plantings in Canada, a benefit to growers in cooler climates like Ontario, as mature vines ripen earlier. Reif Estate Winery also produce wines that reflect the 'terroir', so when people taste Reif wines, people will taste the essence of Reif vineyard. Klaus and Roberto believe that over time a vineyard will express its 'terroir', loosely translated as 'a sense of place'. Many agree that as a vineyard matures its personality (or characteristics) of both climate and soils will be expressed in the wines over time. Reif's terroir is best expressed by the wines produced in the First Growth Collection, with grapes harvested from the oldest vineyard blocks.
