Tour Introduction & Background for the War of 1812

Purpose of the Tour

It is important for everyone to know how their country came to be and the history that helped shape it. The War of 1812 played an important role in the formation of Canada as we know it today. While the Niagara region is most known for hosting Niagara Falls, it is also home to a number of historically important locations in regards to the formation of Canada. The purpose of this tour is to introduce you to this side of the Niagara region, highlighting the rich history that surrounds the area in relation to the War. The 5 locations this tour will bring you to will educate on the past, taking you back to the 1800's when Canada was a young country. Each stop holds a different story, each adding to how Canada came to be. For many people it is often hard to learn just by reading, so these locations will serve to put you the history and educate first hand on site. With war also unfortunately also comes death, and each of these locations are none too familiar with that. While to say ghosts are confidentially real would be a stretch, but nonetheless each of these locations are rumored to be haunted, Thus adding a different level of interest to the tour as well. Whether to just learn about Canada's role during the war of 1812, or for the possibility to see those the war left behind, this tour offers something for many!

Notes about the Tour

The tour is arranged that you begin with the location that opens to the public first and finishing with the location that is open the latest. It can be completed in one day, or it can be broken up over time, depending on how you choose to. While the locations have some connections, you do not required to visit them all or in the order given, for the tour to make sense. The history of each location speaks for itself, therefore you can learn a lot by just visiting one, or all of them should you so choose.

Old Fort Erie is the farthest point on the tour, and a fair distance from the other locations. It may seem like a very long distance to travel, but the drive along the Niagara Park Way makes it enjoyable and brings you past a number of notable sites within the area , including Niagara Falls. While it is possible to exclude it and still gain a great amount of knowledge about the War of 1812, it is highly encourage you do include this location!
