In the 1920s, the emergence of cabaret culture sparked in Berlin. Cabaret is defined as a deviant culture through challenging social structure, by means of entertainment in theatres, public performances, music, dancing, and dinner-theatre. As a result of the destruction in World War II, majority of the original sites have since been restructured, while attempting to maintain the unique 1920s style. Cabaret culture encouraged deviation from preconceived social norms, such as the emergence of women in social realms and men engaging in forms of controversial entertainment, involving politics and sex. Cabaret culture was a form of engagement in political discussions and socialist ideologies. Prior to the Great Depression, the culture in Berlin was vibrant, expressing celebration of economic revival and ending national hardship. By the emergence of the Nazi regime, however, this culture began to be suppressed. Under the Nazi regime, Cabarets were victim to intellectual criticism and began to suffer by means of closure of these organizations. Under the suppression of Nazi rule, the entertainment culture became extremely censored and as a result, limited the amount of entertainment available, until an ultimate silencing of this culture. As the theatre stages began to close, many actors and those individuals involved in cabaret culture fled, leaving the vibrant culture silenced. Berliner's faced devastation during the war, bringing physical and psychological damage to the city. Following the defeat of the Nazi regime, came a revival of the cabaret culture, which is reflective of the lifting tensions brought by the Great Depression and the horrific wartime society that Berlin faced.
