The Whirlpool Aero Car is Niagara's only antique cable car. It is suspended between two cliffs on the Canadian side of the Niagara Whirlpool's waters and is held by six cables. Visitors at this location can take a ride back and forth between both points of suspension on the Canadian side of the border. While hiking at the Niagara Gorge, it can be viewed by people below and also on the American side of the border as well.
A snack bar and gift shop are also a part of this location.
In 1913, the idea of a new tourist attraction was proposed to the Niagara Parks Commission. The design was constructed immediately afterwards by a renowned Spanish engineer Leonardo Torres Quevedo. Construction for the cables housing began in 1915 while the actual car was constructed over seas and sent to Canada. The Whirlpool Aero Car had its official opening day in the warm summer weather of August 1916 and it is actually the only aero car of its kind.
Pictured above are the stairs leading down towards the boarding deck for the aero car.
The Whirlpool Aero Car takes visitors over the Class 6 whitewater rapids while suspended and travels between two cliffs on the Canadian side of the border. Just because both points of the cables are on the Canadian side, doesn't mean it stays there. Visitors who ride the aero car cross the American border on four separate points of the journey in one ride because of the way the river below bends around the corner.
Importance Within NPC
The Whirlpool Aero Car used to struggle in its early years of operation but was ultimately purchased entirely by the Niagara Parks Commission in 1968. The Aero Car serves a great importance to the NPC as it is a unique piece in history that has been preserved over the years. Even in 1984 when the NPC made significant changes to all of the mechanical components to make sure the attraction was upgraded and modernized, the aero car itself remained unchanged to preserve the very history it carries.
