General Description

Queenston Heights Park is a massive historical site that features several historical monuments, memorials, hiking trails, and more. Visitors can take a look into the past while they walk the grounds where the attempted American invasion was stopped by our own troops and even climb the Brock monument when open to the public.

Recreational Features

Queenston Heights Park is not only a historical site as it also features facilities such as two picnic pavilions, washrooms, a children's splash pad, tennis courts, a band shell, snack bar, playground, and a restaurant that provides seasonal fine dining. Unfortunately due to the current pandemic, most of said facilities (including Queenston Heights Restaurant) are closed however the grounds are still open. Queenston Heights Park has multiple monuments in memorial of Aboriginal peoples, and must follow the 1st rule of best heritage interpretation practices. The memorials respect and explain the history of Aboriginal people through designated and registered points of access.

Historical Attributes

The grounds of Queenston Heights were declared a national historic site of Canada after the battle of Queenston Heights was fought here when an attempted invasion by the American troops was stopped by the Canadian/British troops in the War of 1812. Several historical monuments can be found at Queenston Heights among the grounds. This includes the Laura Secord and Sir Isaac Brock monuments. The grounds also include the Six Nations and Native Allies Commemorative Memorial which commemorates the sacrifices made by First Nations soldiers during the War of 1812 and also recognizes their ceremony of peace held in 1815 for Native nations who fought on opposing sides of the war.

Many informational signs can be found around the grounds and associated with the monuments/memorials like the one pictured above. This one is outside of the Brock monument, detailing Sir Isaac Brock's contributions to his battles in the War of 1812. This also details what he did to prepare for the war, along with his end and legacy afterwards.

Ecological Attributes

Queenston Heights Park also features several walking and hiking trails through the grounds and the woods that surround it. It also includes grand carpet bedding displays that surround both monuments on the grounds which are not only pleasing to the eye but also good for pollinators as well.

Importance Within NPC

The battle of Queenston Heights was one of the most famous battles in the War of 1812 where Sir Isaac Brock lead a counter attack against the Americans and eventually helped the Canadian/British armies regain control of Queenston. This location is one of the many crucial pieces of the Niagara Parks Commission because of its rich history in the War of 1812. This location is used to educate visitors on not only the location but also the story of Sir Isaac Brock and his heroic actions to help reclaim Canadian grounds all while providing lush wilderness to explore and enjoy peacefully. This puts visitors right in the spots where the heart of the battle took place and provides an eye opening experience.
