Melville Bissell created an ingenious carpet sweeper device, and founded a manufacturing business in Michigan. He died in 1889, but his widow Anna Bissell took control of the company, which branched out to Niagara Falls in 1907. It was located in an industrial building on Drummond Road near Murray Street, and an electrical system, a boiler house and a water tank were installed to begin manufacture of the famous carpet sweepers. Over the years, staff numbers increased, and the variety of household products continued to grow, including rug shampooers, electric brooms and shampoo..
In 1960, a modern 70,000 square foot building was opened on Montrose Road.
The company thrived for many years, but in 1984, the manufacturing plant closed its doors.
Today, there is a condominium building at the Drummond Road address of the former Bissell Carpet Sweeper Company.
