The Niagara Falls, Ontario Shredded Wheat plant opened in 1904, three years after its American counterpart started operations. Shredded wheat was invented by Americans Henry Perky and William Ford. Plant tours became major tourist attractions, as guests were treated to shredded wheat biscuits and cream, sometimes with local fruit added.

The Canadian Shredded Wheat Company was purchased in 1928 by the National Biscuit Company, which became Nabisco foods in 1956. The expanded list of products included "Original Shredded Wheat, Spoonsize Shredded Wheat, Shreddies, Rice Flakes, 100 percent Bran and Team Flakes". Nabisco integrated its food division with Canadian Canners Ltd, manufacturers of Aylmer & Del Monte, in 1987.

Now: Post Consumer Brands

Kraft Canada acquired Nabisco in 1993, and operated the plant until 2007. It is currently run by the international company Post Consumer Brands, which still manufactures Shreddies in the Niagara Falls plant.
