By 1837, a Catholic church had been built at Falls View to serve the local parish. It was dedicated St. Edward, the patron saint of Father Edward Gordon, who had built it.
Carmelites have been responsible for the church since 1875. It was elevated to the status of a Pilgrimage Sanctuary, and by papal decree in March 1861, was reconsecrated Our Lady of Peace. The new name was based on the location of the church "by the sight of the beautiful rainbow that spans the cataract, the sign of peace".
This is the oldest church in the city of Niagara Falls, one of the oldest in Canada, and is still an active, vibrant parish to this day. The church is located immediately beside the old Carmelite monastery, which also remains operational today.
