THE ARMOURY

Then: The Armoury

The Armoury shortly after it opened, 1911.

The Armoury, a two storey red brick building, was constructed in 1911 to replace the old Armoury on Ellis Street. It was the home of the 44th Regiment (44th Lincoln and Welland Battalion), which had been established to defend against Fenian threats after their 1866 attack. The main floor had lecture rooms and administrative offices for the regiment, and the upper floor had a large drill hall, and the officer's mess. The basement housed an indoor firing range. Across armoury street, the old Niagara Falls Carnegie library is visible, today used as offices, and further down Victoria Avenue is the old Niagara Falls City Hall building; this area formed the civic centre for the early 20th-century city.

Sitting in the front yard is a World War I cannon. It had been captured from the German forces on August 8th, 1918 at the Battle of Amiens and donated to the city by Dr. James E. Barry, the medical officer from the battalion that had captured it.

Now: Niagara Military Museum

Today, the historic building hosts the Niagara Military Museum, a registered charity dedicated to preserving and sharing the military history of the Niagara Peninsula.
