Black Walnut Trail/ Swayzee Falls General

If you are someone that enjoys leisurely hikes accompanied with stunning views, beautiful forests teaming with wildlife, and a pet friendly experience this hike might be for you!

Black Walnut trail is an approximate 5 kilometer loop that connects with the Swayzee falls loop that is 11 kilometers long. This trail head for this hike is located as part of the Short Hills Provincial Park on Pelham Rd, St. Catharines, ON L0S 1E0. There you will find a parking lot with ample parking as well as a map of the trails if you wish to view the surrounding area.

Recreational Features

Black Walnut Trail has: Moderate 5 kilometers trail that can be used throughout all the seasons. If you choose to go for a more difficult experience there is the option of a longer 11 km trail. Most of the walk is accompanied with a Tforest landscape, you will also find rivers with bridges, and waterfalls. his location is great for bird watching as it is teaming with goldfinches, cardinals and indigo buntings. Snakes are common in this trail and you will sometimes encounter garter snakes. If you have a K9 companion this trail is pet friendly just note that your pet must be on a leash on site. This trail is also popular among horseback riders as well as mountain bikers.

Historical Attributes

The Black Walnut trail is connected with the Bruce trail. Bruce trail being a trail that starts from the Niagara River all the way north to Tobermory, being 885 kilometers in length.

Ecological Attributes

This trail is made up of numerous steep hills and uneven ground accompanied with natural terrain paths inside the forest. As this is a forest multiple animal and plant species call this home as you will get the chance to spot some of these on your hike. The trail sides are teaming with wildflowers such as the Common Milkweed as well as Birdsfoot Trefoil.
