The History of McFarland House

  • The oldest original building still standing in Niagara-on-the-Lake
  • Built by John McFarland, the house boasts the impressive wealth of the McFarland family. Built with bricks made on the property, the two story home features a number of rooms, filled with antiques from the time period, depicting how things would have been set up at the peak of the houses history.
  • The house was occupied by both the British and the Americans during the war.
  • It was used as a hospital and a command center during this time.
  • John McFarland and his son James were both arrested by Americans after refusing to provide them with food and horses. They were then walked from their home to an American prisoner of war camp in New York state.
  • When James finally journeyed home, he acted as a scout for the British and stopped at Fort Niagara,
  • He reported back to them and they were able to set out an attack on Fort Niagara, which launched from McFarland House. \
  • Pivotal attack in turning the tides of the war.
