History of Laura Secord

  • The homestead is an example of middle class living during the early 1800's.
  • The Secords resided in the Village of Queenston, which had been attacked and taken over by the Americans at the beginning of the War of 1812.
  • The British forces had been pushed back, but a select group of 50 men remained in the area to go against the American troops.
  • On a June evening in 1813, Laura Secord overheard a conversation about a surprise attack on the remaining British soldiers, as the Americans looked to further their reach.
  • The next morning Laura set out on her journey, walking 32 kilometers from Queenston to present day Thorold, to warn British Lieutenant James FitzGibbon of the impending invasion.
  • Due to the efforts of Laura, the British were able to prepare for, with the help of their Indigenous Allies, and defeat the American's at the Battle of Beaverdams. When it had come time to fight the Americans the British had been greatly out numbered and would have lost the battle without their Indigenous Allies. While the Indigenous soldiers did most of the work the British did ultimately take the credit for the victory!

The Ghosts of the Secord Homestead

The happenings of the Secord Homestead are less publicized, but that doesn't mean there are not ghosts hiding in the shadows. Things said to have happened include:

  • Voices of people talking throughout the house
  • People have seen the figure of a woman standing in the upstairs bedroom window. There are many who would like to believe its Laura watching over the homestead
  • There's one particular story, where a guest was looking around upstairs, when they began to hear what sounded like the downstairs being ransacked. The sounds of glass breaking and things being thrown were clearly heard by the guest. Concerned, they went to the stairs and peered down to see what the commotion was, only to find everything in place and the house empty. Could it be the American troops returned to find some extra treasure?

No Ghost tour is offered at this location
