Bauhaus Archiv Museum

This location on the walking tour is the Bauhaus Archiv-Museum. This building, constructed in 1979, was a work of inspiration from the famous Bauhaus architect, Walter Gropius as a late response to the Bauhaus architectural and artistic movements. This building was constructed in the bustling metropolis of downtown Berlin. This style of building was unique for the era, as were the other Bauhaus architecture as it pushed the societal norm and challenged common conceptions of what buildings should look like. This new type of architectural design combined art, simplicity and movement with the base concepts of architecture to create the style seen throughout Berlin. This site holds importance as it contains the remaining documents and relevant information relating to the Bauhaus movement as well as the school. The historical significance of this site cannot be understated as it captures the nature of the Bauhaus movement and the resulting architectural and artistic movements that were a response from this significant time period in art history. Furthermore, with the proximity to the Nazi movements and influences, this art movement can often carry connotations of WWII or Nazi influence which has solidified its place in German history. Presently, the museum is closed due to construction and will reopen in 2022. In the meantime, it has been moved to a temporary space at Knesbeckstr 1-2 in Berlin-Charlottenburg.

Owing to the controversial nature of the Bauhaus architecture and artistic thought, this Bauhaus Archiv-Museum contains the provocative history of the progression of the movement. The contents of this Archiv includes documents, designs and other such papers that were directly from or associated to the Bauhaus school that was running from 1919-1933. At the time, this school was the most influential school of architecture, art and design in the early 20th century which makes the contents of the Archiv extremely important. The nature of the school was innovative at its core which often resulted in their student's innovations being disregarded and pushed down as illegitimate ideas. The innovator of the Bauhaus movement felt as if the Archiv could only ever be independent due to the volatile effect the Bauhaus inspired architecture and art had on the art community. The new style of art combined with architecture was very forward-thinking and ahead of the time. This controversy, coupled with the associations to the Nazi party, furthered the volatile responses that were being received. The physical architecture of the building which houses the Archiv is within the Bauhaus style which includes lots of open, simple architecture which includes light and windows. The Bauhaus documents contained within the Archiv are products of the changing notions of architecture at the end of the 19th century. Architects in the start of the 20th century were experimenting with different materials, designs and techniques which birthed many new movements, including Bauhaus. These innovative ideas and concepts have been collected within this Archiv as a resource to look back and study an extremely influential art and architectural movement in Europe. This is the first stop on the walking tour as it allows for people to get introduced to the general concepts surrounding the history of the Bauhaus movement, it's influences and the lasting monuments we see today. This style has also been utilized in modern day through inspiring many other art and architectural designs such as the use of the concepts by Ikea to design their furniture they market.
