The building itself is quite a site, many people visit the place just to see the house. It can be considered as a landmark of the City of St. Catharines.
There are events year-round at the Rodman Hall Art Centre, and depending on the event, there will be different recreational activities. For example there was a site-specific sound performance in the Walker Botanical Garden on July 8, 2018. There are also art classes or camp for kids, see the Rodman Hall Art Centre website for more information.
Recreation activities happens mainly outside of the art centre, like in the Walker Botanical Garden and recreation activities occurs only when there is a planned event since the art centre is owned by Brock University.
Rodman Hall Art Centre was originally built by Thomas Rodman Merritt. The art centre used to be Thomas Rodman Merritt's house. He built a stone house on twenty acres of picturesque land on the edge of downtown St. Catharines. In 1863 the house underwent renovations and a major addition was added. It came to be known as Rodman Hall.
Thomas Rodman Merritt was the fourth son of the Honourable William Hamilton Merritt who built the first Welland Canal. He was the grandson of Thomas Merritt, a United Empire Loyalist, who fled from the United States in 1796, and decided to settle in the Niagara district, he then bought land on the east bank of Twelve Mile Creek slightly south of the Queen Elizabeth Way.
As for the Walker Botanical Garden, Merritt hired an English gardener named Samuel Richardson. Richardson developed a wonderful garden featuring well kept lawns, exotic trees, fountains, borders and a terraced garden on the hillside leading down to the Twelve Mile Creek.
Rodman Hall Art Centre is right next to the Twelve Mile Creek and several Laura Secord Legacy Trail (Participark Trail, Merritt Trail, Twelve Trail). There are also human planted flora around the house and in the garden.
The Rodman Hall Art Centre is now owned and managed by Brock University.
