While Queenston Heights prominently features the Secord and Brock monuments, they are a secondary focus on this tour. The site that is featured in the tour is the Queenston heights Redan, where Major-General Isaac Brock oversaw the defense of Queenston. A "Redan" is a Secondary Fortification, usually a wedge-shaped earthwork, similar to a single wall of a Fort. Today, It is a little-known feature of the Queenston site.Current admission prices can be found at:
The Battle of Queenston Heights was the first major engagement of the War. The Americans, coming down the Niagara river from Fort Niagara, attempted to get a foothold at the Village of Queenston. There was little hope of making a beachhead near Niagara on the Lake, as the waterway was commanded by the British Fort George. What is often overlooked is how important the Redan was during the first phaze of the battle, as it was where Major-General Isaac Brock oversaw the first part of the battle. The Redan's guns prevented the Americans from scaling the Queenston hill.
The Brock and Secord Monuments are accessible to those with accessibility concerns, but visiting the Redan requires climbing down a steep wooden staircase, which may prove difficult.
