The Stone Store, located at 11 Front Street South, was built by William Martin in 1865 on property that was owned by him and his two brothers. Behind the building is an alleyway that once led to the 2nd Welland Canal and Lock 24 located directly behind the store. The building was built and developed on what became the commercial center of Thorold. Many of the buildings throughout Thorold have a common link to the Welland Canal systems as they were an intricate part of the settlement and building of the town.
The building has changed many hands and different businesses, the first to occupy the space was a drapery store. The building is currently home to a local fashion designer.
This impressive 2-storey stone building with Italianate style features stunning round-headed windows with two chimneys and cast iron columns made by A. Dobbie Foundry of Thorold. Large rounded windows, brackets and columns are very popular throughout most of the architecture of the town. The building itself definitely enhances the streetscape of the downtown area. The name of the building comes from the material that was used to build it, stone, as most of the buildings at the time were built from either brick or wood. Not many changes have occurred over the years on the building, few renovations have been done, but they have been done tastefully to keep the originality of the building intact.
