Thorold Heritage Tour - Millstone - Welland Mills



 


 


 


 

Introduction

Located in front of the Welland Mills building, the millstone is used for historical purposes to pay homage to what this site use to be. The site use to be home to the second Welland Canal as well as the Mills themselves, which used the canal for power.

Historical Significance

This stone, although it may look simple is important to the history of the town. It is made from a portion of the Second Welland Canal System which was important to a lot of settlement in the town, as well as a way to provide well equipped residents with a job.

Travelling From Toronto:

Take QEW (Niagara)
Take exit 49 for ON 406 for Thorold/Welland/Port Colbourne
Merge onto Kings Highway 406
Slight right at Kings highway 58(signs for Thorold/ON58/Niagara Falls)
Take the Pine Street Exit towards County Road 67
Left at Pine Street South
Slight left to stay on Pine Street
Destination will be on the right.

Travelling From Fort Erie / Buffalo, NY:

Take the Peace Bridge to enter Canada (Ontario)
Continue on to Peace Bridge (toll road)
Continue on QEW
Take exit 32 for Thorold Stone road toward Thorold/County Road 57
Left at Thorold Stone Road
Continue onto King's Highway 58
Take the exit towards Pine street south
Right at Pine Street South -> North
Slight left to stay on Pine Street and destination will be on the right
