Thorold Heritage Tour - Dominion Government Building

Introduction

The Federal Government at one point in time chose to close many of its postal outlets across Canada which caused quite the commotion. A large argument was made to keep this building as it represents freedom of local post offices in small rural towns. The fight to keep this building in the town shows how strong a community can be when it comes to important things that represent who they are as a town. The building has been constructed using white, ground Queenston stone in front and red brick for the sides and rear and was finished in a manner to befit a small city in Canada in the 1930's.

Historical Significance

Post offices in Canada have always been important buildings to any community; they were central locations and became meeting places for the residents of the municipality. The building was one of more 240 building that were built within the second half of the 1930's. The building itself was one of the only federal buildings built in the city of Thorold, making it that much more important.

Current Building Use

The Dominion Government Building is still used today as a local Post Office, but there is also a local fashion designer that currently occupies the building. The Post Office-Shannon Passero, occupies a large portion of the building where she sells high end fashion pieces, which are also sold internationally. The building is linked to the Old Fire Hall as well, originally starting there, but it is now home to their workshop.
