The Welland Mills is located on 20 Pine Street South in Thorold, Ontario. The building was built in the mid 1800's by Jacob Keefer, whose family is believed to one of the founding families of Thorold. The building represents an excellent example of an early industrial building. Recognized as one of Canada's largest flour mills, and given historical designation by the Ontario Heritage Destination in 1986, the mills represent a tremendous amount of historical significance for the town. The building is now used for many local businesses surrounded as well by newly developed townhomes.
The Welland Mills were originally built along the second Welland Canal, which has since been filled in. The Welland Canal systems were an important part of the Thorold community as they provided residents with jobs. The Canal Systems, which are still relevent in today's society run through much of the Niagara Region, much of which is through Thorold, "Where the Ships climb the mountain". The Welland Mills were built by Jacob Keefer whose family was important to a lot settlement and buildings in the Thorold area, including the Keefer Mansion.
