Niagara Falls School Section No. 4, was built in 1850 in Stamford. It was a fine, one room, one storey, red brick schoolhouse. In 1909, a new four-room red brick school (called the Union School) was built beside it, and the old one-room schoolhouse was demolished.
The new Union School held the first school fair in Welland County, in the fall of 1913. Students were given seeds to plant in spring, which they could bring in at the start of the next school year and exhibit at the September fair. Crafts were on display. There was a softball tournament, public speaking competitions, and harmonica playing contests.
Overcrowding in the school led to the construction of a second building with four classrooms, followed by a one room annex. By 1946, two steel portable classrooms had been added.
Today's John Marshall School opened in 1969 on the same site as its predecessors.
