The Main Street Tunnel located in Welland, Ontario, bridges Highway 406 and Highway 140. It is located

just under the welland canal and was opened May 20, 1972. The tunnel which I have personally driven

through several times, has four lanes for traffic. Two in each direction separated by a large concrete

wall. Radio reception is nowhere to be found as the thickness of the concrete is substantial. A sidewalk is

also present for pedestrians in the westbound section.

What is best about this location is the sidewalk so that you can personally see the inside of the tunnel.

The dim yellow lights along the long strip of tunnel is definitely scary at night especially when there are

no cars. It almost feels as if you are going to another dimension, one that is part of the supernatural.

The City of Niagara owns and maintains the tunnel.
