The Woodruff house which is now the main tasting venue at Ravine was built in 1802 on the St.Davids namesake. In 1814 the house was burned to the ground by American Soldiers and was eventually re-built incorporating the original chimney and fireplace. In 1867 this farm was purchased by David Jackson Lowrey, where it didn't take long for him to take advantage of this rich soil where the Niagara River used to run through by planting 500 vines and became one of the first commercial vineyards in the area. In 1969 the Woodruff house was disassembled and moved to Caledon, but later moved back to St.Davids in 2003. In July of 2009 after 40 years was re-opened to the public and continues to run to this date.
Ravines Vineyard is located in a unique location in Niagara on the Lake breaking the vineyard into 3 sections. This includes the upper bench, the slope, and the bottom. Each of these includes different soil compositions allowing different vines to pair to the soil. On the upper bench, this was located in the shallower flowing part of the river which holds a high clay content which they paired with the Merlot. The slope after 5500 years or erosion which holds a thin mineral conductive soil which allowed Ravine to grow a Burgundy-Style Chardonnay. Lastly, the bottom which holds rich mineral, humus and organic material where Chardonnay Musque was planted to take advantage of the extra vigor producing a fresh vibrant flavor.
