During the War of 1812 the Royal Marine Artillery often, though not exclusively, used Congreve Rockets from their ships to bombard targets on land. Congreve Rockets were used primarily at the commencement of battle to deter the enemy. On July 25, 1814 Congreve Rockets were deployed from this spot during the Battle of Lundy's Lane.

Most famously, Congreve Rockets were used in the bombardment of Fort McHenry (Maryland) in September of 1814, which led to the writing of "The Star-Spangled Banner" – the Rockets in "rockets red glare" were the Congreve Rockets.
