Port Weller is a small community located in the north-eastern portion of St. Catharines. Port Weller was named after John Weller, an engineer on the first Welland Canal. The Port contains several parks and trails that follow alongside the Welland Canal and Lake Ontario. The Port features Sunset Beach, a lovely beach on Lake Ontario surrounded by greenery. Running right through Sunset Beach is the Waterfront Trail, a trail that runs through Ontario and alongside Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, Lake Huron, and Lake Superior. Port Weller is divided by the Welland Canal. Port Weller west primarily features parks and residential areas, while Port Weller east features industrial development, such as the Port Weller Dry Docks.
Grantham Lions Park is a sports park located on the side of Niagara Street. It's home to a baseball field, soccer field, and small playground. Grantham Lions Park is also a bus transfer point for Port Weller bus routes. To get to Grantham Lions Park take either the 307, 308 / 408,409, or 417 buses.
The Welland Canal is a ship canal that connects Lake Ontario to Lake Erie through the Niagara Peninsula. The Canal that runs through Port Weller today is the fourth iteration of the canal. Each predecessor was smaller in size. There are eight locks. Each lock raises and lowers ships between the different water levels of the canal. The canal allows for large cargo ships to pass between the Great Lakes to city ports such as Toronto, Detroit, Cleveland, Montreal, or Quebec.
Port Weller is home to Lock 1 of the present-day Welland Canal which acts as the entrance to the canal and exit to Lake Ontario. To get to Lock 1 from any of the Port Weller bus routes, get off at the Grantham Lions Park bus stop. Head north along Niagara Street and then head west on Lakeshore Road. After a modest walk, you'll reach the Lock 1 drawbridge on Lakeshore Road.
Sunset Beach is a typical sandy beach that runs along the south side of Lake Ontario. The beach has onsite restrooms, playgrounds, and picnic areas. Swimming and relaxing on the beach are the recommendations for bus visitors. To get to Sunset Beach it's recommended to take the 307 or 408 and get off at the Beachaven Drive / Bogart Street intersection. Head north on Bogart Street; the entrance to Sunset Beach will soon be visible. To get to Sunset Beach from the Grantham Lions Park bus stop, head north on Niagara Street and enter Malcolmson Eco Park. Keep heading north to the Waterfront Trail. Follow the Waterfront Trail north towards Sunset Beach. Head onto Lombardy Avenue and pass the water treatment plant. Continue on the Waterfront Trail and you should arrive in the middle of Sunset Beach.
Every Port Weller Bus route runs through Grantham Lions Park. which acts as a good central point for touring Port Weller.
