General Description

Lynch House was built by the Lynch brothers in 1908. Edward was a stonecutter, James a blacksmith, and John a lock tender. The house has many fine features, in one of the most eye-catching and commanding locations in Thorold. When they were docked on the Welland Canal, sailors stayed on the 3rd floor. The house was recognized as a Thorold heritage site in 2015. Today the house's appearance has remained unchanged and is still being well maintained.

The house is a hallmark of the Edwardian style, which includes the simpleness and balance of the house's overall design. It also has a classical-inspired temple of dormers and porches, limestone lintels, sills, and string course, cut stone bricks for the exterior of the house, monochromatic brick design, increased fenestration, a single but tall chimney, bay windows, and classical portico at both front and rear of the house.





 


 


 


 

Historical Attributes

The interior of the house contains some of the finest and most intact woodwork of Thorold's period homes on its ground and upper floors. The ground floor has large baseboards, exceptional moldings, thick windows and door frames, gorgeous oak doors, maple hardwood floors, a very beautiful front entry staircase with very fine woodwork features, a newel post, balustrades, and banister. The door of the house is a pocket entry style that is located in the front and rear of the house. The upper floor has woodwork that is as exceptional in detail as that on the ground floor.

An important feature of this house is a beautifully engraved limestone lintel datestone over the front door. The door is constructed of oak, with beveled glass encompassing half the door. The front windows have stained glass transoms that are a simple but effective example of the art.
