About The Tour

The Village of Queenston is known for being host to many significant historical events, the most notable of which occurred during the War of 1812. One such event is The Battle of Queenston Heights, which occurred on the bluffs above the Village of Queenston and was where General Sir Isaac Brock was fatally shot.

While important, Queenston's colonial wartime history overshadows some of the community-focused histories in Queenston's past and present. This tour seeks to bring these other histories in Queenston to the forefront, focussing on particular buildings and interpreting the relation of the landmarks to the community of Queenston as a whole.

The main sources for this tour consist of old newspaper clippings detailing particular events and community perspectives regarding the points of interest. This interpretation highlights the "mundane" or everyday perspective of the landmarks, and allows you to learn about the lesser-known aspects of the buildings and / or their owners.

The Focus

Do you wish to learn more about the struggle of the Queenston community as they tried to properly preserve the Willowbank estate? Perhaps you're interested in learning about who attended the 150th anniversary of Isaac Brock's Death at St. Saviour Anglican Church. Or maybe you're curious to hear more about the exploits of Samuel Weir before he died and left RiverBrink to the public as a museum? These are the curiosities that are explored in this short jaunt around the Village of Queenston.

The main source of information for this tour was old newspaper articles with a focus on the particular buildings in the tour. Some articles refer to a particular event, an important renovation, or reflect on the current state of the buildings and how they fit within the Queenston community at a particular moment in time. The interpretation of these articles situates the tour between conventional broad-scale historical narratives and local micro-history, allowing listeners a a glimpse of the more mundane but nonetheless interesting and locally significant tales that surround the Queenston community.
