General Information

Sue Ann Staff Estate Winery was opened in September, 2009 by none other than Sue Ann Staff herself. The winery is located on her family's 200 year old estate, Canada's largest privately owned vineyard. Staff's interest in wine making was sparked at the age of 16, and she later went on to study Horticulture and Biotechnology at the University of Guelph. Upon graduation, Staff continued her education in South Australia at the University of Adelaide, obtaining a graduates degree in Oenology.

Staff's established educational background has been the foundation for her exceptional work in wine making. Not only does Staff own Sue Ann Staff Estate Winery, but she is also the winemaker at Megalomaniac (Vineland), and its sister property, Chateau La Confession, in St.Emilion, Bordeaux, France. Staff has won 450 awards, both national and international, throughout her wine making career, including winemaker of the year in 2002.

At Sue Ann Staff Estate Winery, Staff invites you into her home to partake in wine tastings in her kitchen. She offers a variety of VQA certified red and white table wines to sample, as well as her Riesling Icewine, a real treat with tasting notes of ripe tropical fruits, with perfectly balanced acidity. Tasting is not the only highlight of visiting Sue Ann Staff wines; the property is located alongside the Bruce Trail, surrounded by vineyards with a beautiful view just waiting to be discovered. It is also likely that upon arrival you will be greeted by Brix, Staff's Bernese Mountain Dog, whose lovable personality has made him quite famous. He has even got his own "Brix Approved" labels on Staff's wine. Sue Ann Staff Estate Winery is truly a unique experience to be enjoyed year round!

Historical

The winery is located on Staff's 200 year old estate which was originally acquired by her ancestors, who originally emigrated to Canada in the 1700's. The estate was originally designated for fruit and livestock production. The first vineyard was planted in 1898, and is still maintained to this day as a living legacy. Throughout the following 100 years, vineyards continued to be planted, with each successive generation hoping to someday own a winery. This dream came true in 2009 when Staff opened the winery on her family's estate.

Ecological

Sue Ann Staff Estate Winery has been designated a "Sustainable Winemaking Ontario" winery by the Wine Council of Ontario. Specialized weed management practices have allowed Staff to minimize the amount of herbicides being used; in some years, the vines see none at all. Effective allocation of resources has allowed for low water use and recycling wherever possible. These sustainable measures have helped to reduce the ecological footprint of Staff Wines. Staff is looking into new types of packaging to further increase the winery's sustainability.
