Introduction

Welcome to the Laura Secord Legacy Trail.

Laura Secord's epic journey through the wilderness of early Niagara was a significant accomplishment in its own right. But her story has broader significance, serving as a metaphor for the stories of countless other women who also challenged the conventions of their time. They also set off along uncharted pathways of their own, guided by their passion, their vision, and their unflagging determination to reach their goals.

Today you're joining us on the tour we call 'Out of the Wilderness: The Women in Laura's World".

The trail begins here, and is divided into five stages. We'll be telling the women's stories during the first three stages.

Stage One runs between the Secord homestead, here in Queenston, and Fireman's Park, on the crest of the Niagara Escarpment., for a distance of 7 and a quarter kilometres. An average walker will take approximately 2 hours to reach Fireman's Park.

Along the trail you'll hear Laura herself, an older Laura, telling you about her life, her family, and her legendary walk…and how she was so very nearly forgotten by history, as were so many other women. But her story has been told, handed down, and shared. Her success in delivering a message to the British Army represents grit and determination, and for decades, it has captured our imagination.
