VF 23 View towards Mississauga Beach across Royal Niagara Golf Club

Above the rocky Lake Ontario shoreline of Mississauga Beach lies Fort Mississauga, a British fortification built primarily by the efforts of Black Loyalists in Butler's Rangers.

The view towards Lake Ontario today is of the greens and fairways on the tranquil Royal Niagara Golf Club, established in 1875 - but if you look off into the distance, you can just make out the shoreline of Lake Ontario. The rocky shores in that area are known as Mississauga Beach, a location of considerable strategic and military importance during the War of 1812. Just above the cliffs of Mississauga Beach lies Fort Mississauga, the British fortification built by Black Loyalist, Captain Richard Pierpoint, and his corps of engineers. Still formally unacknowledged by any kind of signage on the site, the contribution of labour and craftsmanship by Pierpoint and his black colleagues was enormously significant to the British war effort.

As you walk along Queen Street, continue looking left across the golf course. Off in the distance, you may be able to catch a glimpse of the red brick profile of Fort Mississauga, rising above the surrounding landscape within its star-shaped earthworks.

We will be visiting Fort Mississauga a little bit later in this tour.
