NB 1-17 Port Weller West Pier

The north end of this part of the west pier houses the restricted area of the Canadian Coast Guard and is off-limits to birders.

Prothonotary, Worm-eating, Connecticut and Prairie Warblers have been among the 32 species of warbler observed here and in Malcolmson Eco-Park over the years. This area of the Welland Canal has been a hotbed for rarities, including two Mew Gulls (an adult on 24 October 1967 and a first winter on 28 - 30 November 1967), Rock Wren on 6- 7 December 1964, Ancient Murrelet on 13 November 1994, Tricolored Heron from 27 May to 2 June 2001, three Black-headed Gulls, Eared Grebe and Tufted Duck. However, the area is perhaps best known for the sightings of three different Ross's Gulls over an eleven-month period between 18 December 1994 and 28 November 1995.
