The Biggar Lagoons Wetlands were formerly known as Grimsby Sewage Ponds and Winona Sewage Ponds. They have also been referred to as the Grimsby Wetlands (St. Catharines Standard 2018).
According to Doors Open Ontario (2019), the Biggar Lagoons were sewage treatment lagoons for neighbourhoods in Grimsby's west end from 1950-2000. "After decommissioning the lagoons in 2001, the Town of Grimsby and the Hamilton Naturalists' Club worked to lobby against intentions of draining and levelling the land. Today, each of the six bodies of water provides different habitats for the breeding and migrating of rare shorebirds" (Doors Open Ontario 2019).
Grimsby's Waterfront Trail travels into the wetlands and terminates at a two-storey wildlife viewing tower.
The trail to the wildlife viewing tower is open daily from dawn to dusk.
