The former Merritt home is located at the corner of Yates St. and St. Paul. The building serves as a historical entry way into the heritage district conservation residence. It helps highlight the boundary of the area as well as maintaining the historical significance of the space. Today the original stone garden wall remains around the side of the house and continues on down Yates Street, also around the back of the home, still lies a well-preserved brick coach house (City of St. Catharines,1994).
Geographically the Merritt the home was placed in the perfect location. It was just above all of The Mills that operated along the Twelve Mile Creek, while still maintaining an extremely close proximity to the downtown core of the developing town. During the time Merritt was a well known and well established business man, owning multiple mills along the river and many small shops within the town.
The Oak Hill Estate (The Second Merritt Family Home) is located as the 3rd destination on the Merritt Family Historical Tour.
