Markets of Chonburi: Chatuchuck Chonburi

Friday- Saturday from 6 pm to 11pm

Named in homage to the famous Chatuchak Market in north Bangkok, Chatuchak Chonburi market sits on approximately 12 acres of land - and almost every inch of it is covered with market stalls. It doesn"t have a definite shape but a large circle would be the best way to describe it.

Chatuchak Chonburi offers a wide variety of products including household items, clothing, Thai handicrafts, religious artifacts, collectibles, foods, and live animals.

General information

This is a popular tourist destination. It's a good idea to stop by Chatuchak for a cheap souvenir back home. Among the largest markets in Chon Buri, Chatuchak seems to unite everything buyable, from used vintage sneakers to baby squirrels. Plan to spend an entire evening, as there's plenty to see, do, and buy. There is an area with ATMs and foreign-exchange booths at the main entrance off of the freeway, and there are a few on the opposite side of the market.

There are vendors during the week, but only a handful, so, unless you live in walking distance, it would be best to go on a weekend which consists of Friday night and Saturday night as all other weekend markets do, in Thailand. Once you're deep in the stomach of Chatuchak, it will seem like there is no order, but the market is arranged into no real order so its not just you. Just keep on walking and don't buy anything expensive until you've walked around enough to see comparative pricing. The only market in the immediate area (that is even close to the size) would be Bangsaen walking street. There is a influx of Antiques, Handicrafts & Souvenirs throughout, but some have been mass-prouced products so be weary.

Clothing dominates most of Chatuchak Chon Buri, focusing on the Thai youth culture, traditional to westernized, this market will carry everything. The pets section is going to be the most fun for some: window-shopping petting puppies and cuddling kittens, as well as illegal wildlife. Therre is an amazing food court as well, ranging from stands with the usual Thai cuisine, to sit-down areas where you are served your food and order from a wide variety of items. This area has some of the most full-flavoured rice dishes that are known for being cooked in a chicken stock to give it a pungent and delicious flavor.

Directions

From the front enterance of Burapha university, you would take longhard rd till you hit sumvet, then you turn left and take that all the way till you see chatuchuck on the other side of the freeway - then make your next avaliable U-turn and make your way back.
