Montebello Park

General Information

A green oasis of 2.5 hectares (6.5 acres), in the heart of downtown St. Catharines, Montebello Park offers tree-lined lawns for playing or relaxing. The shaded childrens playground rings with laughter and there is always someone walking their dog nearby. The park also includes a commemorative rose garden and ornamental fountain. This is the citys largest rose collection with more than 1,300 bushes in 25 varieties. Montebello Park functions as a social and historical focal point within St. Catharines, and hosts many cultural and social activities. Some of Niagara's larger events including the Niagara Wine Festival and Rotary Ribfest and the Niagara Folk Arts Festival are held here.

Cultural

Enjoy the sounds of blues, jazz, classical, brass, Dixieland and ethnic bands throughout the summer months in Montebello Park. Performances are scheduled for Sundays and Tuesdays from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. See the City of St. Catharines website for the band concert schedule. Bring a lawn chair and on a warm summer evening sit before this historically designated bandstand built in 1904, close your eyes and dream. The covered, circular Roy T. Adams Bandshell was modeled after the one built for the Buffalo Pan American Exhibition. Rain or Shine, shelter in the pavilion built in 1888

Historical

Montebello Park is St. Catharines historic city park and was the first parkland in St. Catharines. In 1887, the city purchased the park from William Hamilton Merritt Jr., who had earlier named it 'Monte Bello', or beautiful mountain. The park was created by none other than Frederick Law Olmstead, among whose works are New York Central Park and the grounds of Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.
