Highview Farm

General Information

Highview Farm is a 90 hectare beef farm located in the headwaters of Twenty Mile Creek. Many progressive management practices have been implemented, and thousands of people have seen the results. Highview Farm provides free educational opportunities for school groups to learn about: Watersheds and Water Quality; Soil Management; Woodlots and Wildlife; and the Business of Farming. The farm is privately owned by Fred and Sharon High, who are more than willing to meet with any interested organizations.

All groups should book appointments with Fred High prior to visiting. A self guided tour pamphlet is also available for individuals visiting the site.

Ecological

Highview Farms is attempting to meet the significant environental challenges of being located at the headwaters of a creek. Since 1995, the Lincoln Waterways Working Group (LWWG) and proprietor Fred High have worked to demonstrate best management practices for soil and water management, and improve water quality within the Twenty Mile Creek watershed. The project emphasizes the importance of small headwater tributaries to the health of the ecosystem as a whole.

Highview farm provides visitors an opportunity to see: stabilized drainage channels used to reduce erosion and protect access lanes; riparian plantings used to protect water quality by filtering soil particles from surface run-off; use of a cattail wetland to help filter pollutants from runoff water; grassed waterways to convey surface flow across cropland; rock chutes to control erosion in the channel and banks; a water and sediment control basin (WASCoB) to control gully erosion and reduce peak runoff flow volumes downstream; no-till planting to control erosion, conserve moisture and reduce crop production costs; woodlot management for wildlife habitat, timber production and water quality benefits; and the use water quality monitoring instruments and techniques.
