Ridge Berry Farm

General Information

Ridge Berry Farm occupies just over 27 acres of fertile sandy loam soil in the centre of the Niagara Penninsula. With a climate tempered by Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, the farm has always been dedicated in some measure to fruit production. However, in recent years, many of the fruit crops have been replaced by other more commercially viable species, and today most of the land is used for corn production. But the current owners, who aquired the propery in the summer of 2013, would like to return the property to its original splendour as a small fruit farm.

Today Ridge Berry Farm features small patches of Purple Raspberries and Blackberries. They are also re-establishing an old plot of Arctic Kiwis (unique grape-sized fruit similar to kiwifruit in taste and appearance, but green, brownish, or purple in colour, with smooth skin. The farm also hosts plots of Juneberries (a.k.a. Saskatoons) and Mulberries, as well as some well established Concord grapes. The farm managers are also working on returning a few old apple trees (Crabapple, McIntosh, Empire, and rare Pippin apple trees) into regular production.

The property also includes a small but beautiful patch of Carolinan Forest. Here you will find Black Walnut, Shagbark Hickory, Sugar Maple, Sassafras, Ramps (wild leek), Garlic Scapes (edible stalks of hardneck garlic that resemble chives in appearance), wild blackberries, wild grapes, and a variety of different wild mushrooms including Pheasant Back Saddle Mushrooms and Powder Puffs.

Historical

The lovely heritage home at Ridge Berry Farm is known as Ward Manor. It is a two storey residence constructed in 1880 in the Victorian style, with Second Empire and Italianate influences. It is a classic Victorian house, very atypical for Canadian homesteads of the time. Once subdivided in three apartments, it is now restored to a single family home.

Associated with the house is a large fruit barn of the same period. Today the barn houses The Berry Patch Tea Room "Farm To Table" and our Country Market Store.

The Town of Pelham is composed of a number of small villages. Ridgeville borders the western edge of Fonthill, getting its name from its location on the south western ridge of the Fonthill Kame.

Further Information

The Shoppes of Ridgeville are just a hop, skip and a jump down the road to the east, including a bakery, chocolate shop, kitchen store and a specialty home and bath shop.

The popular Gwennol Organic Blueberry Farm is just around the corner on Effingham Street.
