The Court House Theatre was constructed in the 1840s. The architect that designed the building was, William Thomas. He incorporated Italianate and Neoclassical design into a lot of his public buildings. This building was a very important and well known structure in what was Canada's capital, back when Niagara on the Lake was known as Newark. The builiding was used as a court house for more than a decade. This court house used to cater to more civic purposes rather than judicial functions. The court house had also been the town hall as well as the public library and has accommodated municipal and federal offices. This theatre is where the Shaw Festival started in 1962; the festival's first grand performance was performed in the court room. The Court House Theatre was the first theatre involved in the Shaw Festival.
