Nelles Millstone

General Information

Just at the end of Gibson Street, on the west side of the foot bridge, is a millstone (1793) from one of the mills that Robert Nelles operated with his son, Henry. Credit goes to the Grimsby Historical Society for tracking down the stone and mounting it for the public to see. It is recorded that Robert owned a sawmill and a gristmill on Forty mile Creek in 1806.

At one time there were five mills powered by the Forty Mile Creek, two on top of the escarpment and three below. This stone is a reminder of days past as it sits on the old Mill Path at the entance of a pretty private garden.

If you bring your walking shoes you can find the nearby stunningly beautiful Bruce Trail path that leads you up the Niagara Escarpment to Beamer Memorial Conservation Area. Look for the small rectangular white blazes that mark the trail.

Hours of Operation

The Grimsby Historical Society, archives and brochures (call for availability), are located at the Carnegie Commons Building. They are available by phone or for a visit on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:30 am - 12 noon or by appointment.
